Crowe's goal with each of his films is to give the audience a rich, rewarding cinematic experience that sends viewers home with that intangible "warm, fuzzy feeling." So, although not everything that happens during Say Anything is positive, the ending is upbeat.
We like them, understand them, and want them to succeed. By the end of the movie, not only have we gotten to know the protagonists, but Say Anything is essentially a three-character drama that transpires over the course of oneĮventful summer. It's interesting to note that, with each film, Crowe's characters have grown progressively older (although not necessarily more mature). It preceded 1992's Singles and 1996's Oscar-nominated Jerry Maguire. Say Anything was Crowe's directorial debut (he broke into the Hollywood spotlight in 1982 as the screenwriter for Fast Times at Ridgemont High). This quality is evident in his insightful dialogue, intelligent storylines, and finely-tuned characters. It's one of those moments that you recognize, even if you've never actually seen the movie the moment is based on. The scene is so famous that it's been copied and parodied numerous times in other films and on television. Who knows if he feels any differently now. For some reason, maybe he just didn't care for the film, he declined to contribute a song for Say Anything. It's almost hard to imagine any voice other than that of Peter Gabriel in that famous scene, but it could have just as easily been the voice of Elvis Costello singing an entirely different song if the singer and decided to do it.
But the Peter Gabriel song was later, so I don't think -I'm sure he played a great song at the time -and in my memory it was "In Your Eyes" when I was doing my scene, but it wasn't. Cameron Crowe really wanted Elvis Costello to do that song, and then he saw an early screening of it and didn't want to.
